Ceramic Houses

Ceramic houses have become more common. They are one of the choice options for people who like alternative green architecture. Ceramic houses are basically buildings which have been made by an earth mixture. The mixture is high in clay and is fired to become ceramic. The process has been practiced and implemented for decades.

Ceramic House

Nader Khalili is the man behind the concept. He is an Iranian architect who felt the need to come up with a new way of making houses. He was for the idea of developing permanent, water and earth quake resistant establishments which could be built through the implementation of all the four elements, namely water, fire, air and earth. Water and earth were to be used to construct the forms before air and fire could be used to finish them. His passion and commitment led to the development of ceramic houses.

Ceramic buildings are usually shaped as squares and rectangles. The roofs can be made in different ways. They could be domes, vaults or arches. Some people opt to sculpt adobe and clay into structures and built-in forms. These may include seats and shelves which will be fired with the rest of the house.

You're Looking Glazed ...

Oxides and different varieties of clay can be used to achieve multiple finishes. Silica which is a component that makes glass is the main mineral oxide in glazing. The cost of glazing depends with the type of finish chosen. It should, however, not be done in all places such as rooms in order to allow the room's skin to breath. For houses the most preferred option are low fired glazes.

Some advantages of ceramic homes are evident. Firing helps to make a structure made of clay water resistant. Ceramic Kilns have been known to last longer than the constructed buildings that are close to them.

Kiln Me Softly ...

The materials needed for ceramic houses are readily available. It involves the use of basic resources. Fuel that is to be used in firing is affordable. This means that the overall costs will be lower hence it will help in saving costs as opposed to if a person had chosen another alternative. Another thing to note is that when a person is firing a house that has already been constructed, pests will evacuate naturally. You won't need an exterminator when kiln pests. :)

Observation

It may be poetic justice if you decorate your home with items from Pottery Barn. :)
